Aisha Buhari launches maternal health campaign in Kebbi

The Wife of Nigeria’s President, Hajiya Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, has flagged off Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week in Birnin Kebbi, with a call on the wives of the 36 state governors to assist in reducing the maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.

Mrs. Buhari said the Federal Government is committed to improve the health sector and reduce maternal and infant mortality to the barest minimum.

She commended the Kebbi State Government and development partners, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation (WHO), for taking bold measures to improve the health of women and children.

The president wife also commissioned a General Hospital named after her in Jega local government and an Islamiyya School in Argungu local government areas of the state.

Mrs. Buhari was accompanied to the occasion by Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, wives of the governors of Sokoto, Zamfara and Niger states, as well as the host governor’s wife, Dr. Zainab Atiku Bagudu.

In a welcome address, Dr. Zainab Bagudu said the maternal week is a weekl ong activity aimed at improving the health of mothers and children. She also stated that the state government entered into bilateral agreement on the protection of children as well as improving the health status of women and children in the state.
