A Youth group, Concerned Northern Youth Forum, have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to upgrade the current Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu, to a full minister.
In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Mr Ayuba Yohanna, the forum stated that Dr. Sununu has demonstrated capacity and competence worthy of a full ministerial position, following the election of the full minister in the ministry, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“As already a minister of state in the ministry, Dr Sununu’s upgrade as the next Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation would be a strategic move, given his demonstrated exceptional experience, capacity, and leadership and a deep dedication to serving humanity,” Mr Yohanna said.
The statement highlighted the forum’s assessment of Dr Sununu’s performance and their belief that he deserves a promotion. The group is calling on the president to consider their request and elevate Dr. Sununu to a full ministerial role in the ministry.
Specifically, the group emphasises Dr. Sununu’s commitment and performance in his current role as Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, citing his contributions to the ministry and his dedication to the humanitarian sector, considering his background as a reputable medical doctor.
“We believe his elevation would be a well-deserved recognition of his capabilities and potential. A renowned and respected physician of great substance in Kebbi State and beyond, whose contributions to humanity are acknowledged by many within and outside Nigeria. His contributions to human development generally are unwavering and patriotic,” the statement read.
The forum further cited other positions and contributions of Dr Sununu, including past Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Kebbi State; National Secretary-General of the NMA; Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services and Member of Several Standing and Adhoc Committees of the House of Representatives.
Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu is a Kebbi State born politician from the APC. Dr Sununu represents Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency of Kebbi State in the House of Representatives. He was the Chairman of the House Committee on Health.
He was appointed Minister of State for Education in the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on August 21, 2023. On October 24, 2024 he was moved to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, during a minor cabinet reshuffling by President Tinubu.
