World leaders will recommit to advancing the health and rights of women, children and adolescents at a high-level event on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
This is contained in a statement signed by Ms Kadidiatou Toure, Communications and Campaigns, Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
She said the Global Leadership Network (GLN) for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health would convene its third Heads of State meeting on September 24.
Ms Toure said it would be under the theme: “Recommitting to Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health and Rights: A Call to Action for Peace, Security, and Sustainable Development.”
According to her, the gathering, chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, comes at a time of global instability, shrinking development financing and worsening humanitarian crises that continue to threaten the health and rights of women and young people.
She added that leaders from countries including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Tanzania and Denmark are expected to participate.
Toure listed the objectives of the meeting to include mobilising bold political and financial commitments, addressing the needs of women and adolescents in fragile settings and exploring innovative financing solutions to counter declining official development assistance.
GLN, established in 2023, is the first Global South-led global health diplomacy initiative, committed to reducing maternal, neonatal and adolescent mortality rates by one-third of member countries by 2030.
