The World Health Organisation (WHO) has highlighted the importance of physical exercise for both physical and mental well-being.

WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr Pavel Ursu, said this in Abuja on Tuesday following a health walk to commemorate the 2026 World Health Day.

Dr Ursu said that April 7 was chosen because WHO was established on that date in 1946.

He said the day celebrated not only World Health Day but also major achievements in human health grounded in science.

He explained that 2026 theme, “Together for Health, Stand with Science,” emphasised the central role of health in human development for both current and future generations.

Dr Ursu encouraged Nigerians to engage in at least 30 minutes of physical exercise daily, noting that health walks were an effective way to promote physical activity and overall wellness.

He further emphasised that science played a crucial role in improving health outcomes, urging Nigerians to prioritise health and evidence-based interventions.

“The WHO’s work is crucial for global health; let us stand together for health and science,” he added.

The health walk started from Old Parade Ground and ended at the Federal Secretariat, promoting awareness of healthy lifestyles.
