The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI) joins the global community in commemorating International Albinism Awareness Day 2026 under the theme, “Proudly in My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones.”
This year’s theme highlights the urgent need to address colour-based discrimination, harmful stereotypes, stigma, and social exclusion experienced by persons with albinism.
A statement issued by VPesDI’s Coordinator, Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, called on governments, institutions, communities, and individuals to recognize and uphold the dignity, rights, safety, inclusion, and mental well-being of persons with albinism.
“Persons with albinism continue to face multiple forms of discrimination in education, employment, healthcare, and social participation. Many are subjected to harmful myths, prejudice, bullying, and barriers that limit their ability to reach their full potential.
“These challenges not only undermine their fundamental human rights but also hinder efforts toward building inclusive and equitable societies,” he added.
As an organization committed to promoting the rights and welfare of vulnerable populations, V-PeSDI calls on:
“Government at all levels to strengthen policies and programmes that protect the rights of persons with albinism, ensure access to quality healthcare services, including skin cancer prevention and treatment, and promote inclusive education and employment opportunities.
“Public and private institutions to eliminate all forms of discrimination within workplaces, schools, and service delivery systems, while creating safe and accessible environments where persons with albinism can thrive.
“Community leaders, religious institutions, and the media to challenge harmful stereotypes and misinformation, promote positive narratives, and foster respect for diversity and inclusion.
“Development partners and civil society organizations to support advocacy, awareness creation, capacity building, and initiatives that advance the rights, protection, and empowerment of persons with albinism.
“Communities and citizens to embrace diversity, celebrate all skin tones, and stand against discrimination, exclusion, and violence in all its forms.”
V-PeSDI firmly believes that every individual, regardless of skin colour or genetic condition, deserves equal opportunities, respect, and the freedom to live with dignity.
“Building an inclusive society requires collective action, understanding, and a commitment to leaving no one behind.
“On this International Albinism Awareness Day, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting inclusion, equality, and social justice for persons with albinism and all vulnerable groups.
“Let us work together to create communities where everyone can proudly live, participate, and contribute without fear of discrimination,” it added.
