A landmark resolution on human rights and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is set to be tabled at the 62nd UN Human Rights Commission (HRC) session, co-sponsored by Malawi and other African Member States.

The resolution aims to strengthen global recognition of NTDs as a health and human rights issue, accelerating progress towards the 2030 NTD elimination goals.

NTDs affect over 1 billion people worldwide, predominantly vulnerable and underserved populations, including those living in poverty and rural communities.

These diseases are both a consequence and a driver of human rights inequities, trapping individuals and communities in cycles of poor health, discrimination, and exclusion.

The resolution seeks to address human rights barriers, promote equity, and accelerate progress towards realizing the right to health for all.

By adopting a human rights approach, NTD elimination can become a public health priority and a matter of justice and human dignity.

Supporters urge governments to back the resolution, emphasizing its potential to strengthen accountability, reduce stigma, and promote access to treatment.

“This resolution is a critical step towards justice and human dignity for those affected by NTDs,” says a statement from advocates.

The resolution’s adoption could mark a significant shift in global health policy, recognizing NTDs as a key aspect of human rights and development.

With NTDs often neglected in global health discussions, this resolution offers a chance to reprioritize efforts and ensure no one is left behind.

The 62nd HRC session presents a critical opportunity for Member States to adopt this vital text.

Advocates are calling on governments to show leadership and support the resolution, paving the way for a healthier, more equitable world.
