The Kano State Hospitals Management Board (KSHMB) said it has reviewed the implementation of its free maternity, child health, and Accident and Emergency services, to reduce maternal and infant mortality.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the board, Ms Samira Suleiman, and made available to newsmen in Kano on Monday.
She stated that the Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, announced the review at a meeting of the board held to evaluate its performance.
He added that the meeting was designed to review the programmes and activities of the board during the second quarter of the year.
According to the statement, the meeting assessed the achievements recorded, identified operational gaps and discussed measures to improve service delivery across secondary healthcare facilities in the state.
“Dr Nagoda further said that a planned supervision would strengthen monitoring, ensure compliance with established standards and improve the quality of maternity, child health and emergency services,” the statement added.
It further quoted the executive secretary as having emphasised the need for improved access to antenatal, delivery and postnatal care, stronger emergency obstetric services, availability of essential medicines and commodities, as well as early referral and prompt intervention in cases of complications.
“The executive secretary urged healthcare professionals to strengthen coordination and supervision.
“He also explained that collective responsibility is critical to reducing preventable maternal and child deaths.
“He further reaffirmed the board’s commitment to supporting health workers and strengthening health facilities to ensure that women, newborns and children receive safe, timely and quality care,” Ms Suleiman added.
