NBTE accredit six courses offered by College of Health Technology, Calabar – Commissioner

Calabar, Dec. 2, 2014 . National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), has accredited six courses offered by the College of Health Technology Calabar, Cross River Commissioner for Health, Prof. Angela Oyo-Ita, has said.

The commissioner, who made the statement on Tuesday in Calabar during the 8th Matriculation Ceremony of the institution, listed the courses to include public health nursing, environmental health and community health. Others are: health information management, medical lab science radiography and dispensing. The commissioner, who represented Gov. Liyel Imoke at the occasion, commended the current administration of the college for embarking on renovation and construction works.

“This administration has carried out massive renovation and construction works in the College of Health Technology, Calabar. This has given the institution an enviable position among similar colleges in the country” she said. She also listed the projects renovated to include the College gate, medical centre, administrative block, medical and laboratory science blocks.

“Others are construction of a 360-seater College auditorium, two-storey building office complex/workshops, equipping of classrooms/staff offices, library (including e-library), as well as landscaping of the school,” she said.

The commissioner stated that in its efforts to provide middle level manpower in healthcare delivery, the government assisted the college to upgrade its facilities. She said the college was the third in the country to provide training for dispensing technicians.

Oyo-Ita expressed appreciation to the Canadian Government and World Health Organisation for providing technical support and equipment for the training of staff and students of the college.

Earlier, the acting provost of the College, Mrs Mercy Effiong, said that NBTE had accredited the Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes offered by the college.“The most astonishing is the five years accreditation granted to the Department of Medical Laboratory Science by Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria,” she said
