Lagos, Dec. 19, 2014 ; The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) on Friday urged persons with disability (PWDs) to register with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency.
Dr Tunde Awelenje, the General Manager of LASODA, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Awelenje said the registration would enable them to enjoy the benefits of the Special Peoples` Law of the state.
“As I speak with you, there is registration of people with disabilities in Lagos State that is ongoing—-That is a prerequisite for any enjoyable benefits of Lagos State Special Peoples` Law that was signed by our Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, in 2011”. The registration will entitle them to disability certificates, which might be temporary or permanent. Temporary in the sense that for a person living with disability for only 180 days or roughly six months, we consider it as temporary. For any disability persisting more than 180 days or six month, we consider it as permanent. That certificate will entitle them to all the enjoyable benefits of the Lagos State Special Peoples` Law, such as customised e-signal, or commonly called `Blue Badges` in advanced countries, to be used at the parking lots.“
NAN reports that the Lagos State Government had on July 20 commenced the registration of people with disabilities in the state. This was aimed at stemming the stigmatisation and abuse of PWDs.
