The African Union Commission (AUC) underscored the need for alignment of the EU-AU partnership with AU’s Agenda-2063 to bolster macro-economic stability and implementation of reforms.
Chairperson of the AUC, Mr Mahmoud Youssouf, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday by Mrs Wynne Musabayana, Head of Communication of AUC, against backdrop of the 3rd AU-EU ministerial meeting in Brussels, Belgium.
The meeting which started from May 19 to 21, 2025 was preceded by the meetings of the African Group of Ambassadors on May 19, and that of the Senior Officials on May 20, respectively.
The chairperson highlighted significant progress so far made in many African countries towards achieving macro-economic stability and implementation of reforms, particularly through initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
According to him, there is the urgent need to move from commitments to implementation, especially in light of Africa joining the G20 and today’s multilateral landscape.
He restated the importance of peace and security for African development, saying the partnership with Europe is vital for stability on the continent.
“There is the need for ongoing dialogue, mutual respect and solidarity to make the partnership successful.
“There should also be commitment to strengthening cooperation and finding practical solutions, to pressing global and regional issues to benefit both Africa and Europe,” he said.
Mr Youssouf met with Antonio Santos da Costa, President of the European Council, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation of Belgium, as well as the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Barrot.
