The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr Dlamini Zuma on Wednesday congratulated Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his victory at Nigeria’s presidential polls. The Prof. Attahiru Jega-led Nigerian Independent Electoral Commission has already presented Buhari, the President-elect with a Certificate of Return as duly elected. Buhari defeated serving president, Goodluck Jonathan in the March 28 election.
Zuma in a statement issued in Addis Ababa said the outcome of the elections clearly demonstrated the maturity of democracy not only in Nigeria but on the African continent. The AUC Chairperson appreciated Jonathan for graciously accepting the results of the elections by conceding to Buhari. She congratulated Nigerians and other candidates for their peaceful conduct in the electoral process. Zuma urged Nigerians to unite and face the challenges of stability and security to enable the country to play its role “as one of the locomotives of Africa’s Socio-economic development. “
