The Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN), said it will collaborate with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) to tackle the multiple public health challenges facing the country.

According to a statement issued by IHVN Communication Manager, Mr. Dennis Mordi in Abuja, the Managing Director of IHVN, Mr. Charles Mensah, said that the position of NIMR is critical in biomedical research in Nigeria.

Mr. Mensah noted that the collaboration would engrain the culture of research needed to gear the several health challenges confronting the country.

He stressed that with adequate funding NIMR could support and oversee biomedical research institutions while undertaking her own research as it was done by the National Institutes of Health in USA.

He said that research activities funded or conducted by NIMR can provide findings that pharmaceutical companies can turn into effective medications for the treatment of many diseases in the country.

He added that he appreciated the valuable collaboration existing between the two organisations in the fight against HIV and DR/TB in the country.

Speaking, the NIMR Director-General, Professor Babatunde Salako, acknowledged the support of many Implementing Partners like IHVN for the continued existence of the institute, especially in the area of infrastructural upgrades.

While assuring that NIMR is in position to lead biomedical research in Nigeria, he called for more support for the institute to achieve an enhanced and sustainable biomedical research in Nigeria.
