The Malam Madori community of Jigawa state have commended the UNICEF and the Local Government Council for executing rural water projects in the area.
The UNICEF in collaboration with Malam Madori LGA had embarked on comprehensive repair of 110 hand pumps, to enhance access to safe drinking water in rural communities.
A cross section of the residents who spoke to newsmen described the gesture as commendable.
The residents said that broken hand pumps and water tanks were rehabilitated in various communities, noting that the gesture would ease the difficulties experienced by the people in sourcing for safe drinking water.
The council’s Chairman, Alhaji Ali Alkali, said about 10 obsolete hand pumps were rehabilitated in each of the 11 wards in the area.
Alhaji Alkali said that the project was designed to enhance sanitation and water supply for domestic and animal consumption.
According to him, the project had reached about 85 per cent completion, adding that more hand pumps will be procured and provided in the communities.
The chairman called on the people to protect water facilities and other public property in their communities.
