Kano State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has reiterated its commitment to develop 2026 Annual Operational Plan (AOP) and accelerate progress on Humanitarian and Emergency Management and Response, Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection.
The commitment was made by the ministry after rising from a stakeholders meeting with its agencies, office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs, State Assembly Committee on Humanitarian Affairs and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
The meeting was organised by the Aminu Magashi Garba (AMGF) on the recently concluded National Council on Humanitarian Affairs and Reduction that took place between 27th – 29th January, 2026 at Calabar, Cross Rivers State and attended by Dr Aminu Magashi Garba, the Chairman of AMG Foundation who also serves as the Technical Adviser to the Kano State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
The national meeting, themed “Beyond the National: Strengthening Sub-National and Multi-Stakeholder Synergy for a Unified Approach to Humanitarian Response and Poverty Reduction,” brought together key actors to deliberate on strategies for improving humanitarian coordination across Nigeria.
During the engagement, Dr Magashi presented eight memos that were extensively discussed at the National Council on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction meeting, outlining their relevance to humanitarian coordination, poverty reduction strategies and social protection reforms at the state level.
The memos presented during the experience sharing and with humanitarian and poverty reduction relevance to Kano State are:
“Memorandum to the National Council on Humanitarian Affairs on the need to provide social/integrated nutritional support to pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) with at least N5,000 during their first 100 days in order to prevent malnutriton and improve child care system.
”Request for council’s approval for the implementation of the Grant for Vulnerable Groups (GVG) Initiative. A memorandum for the approval to strengthening sub-national and multi-stakeholder synergy for a unified approach to humanitarian response and poverty reduction.
“Implementation of a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework on humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction. Strengthening poverty reduction initiative and expanding social safety nets.
“Institutionalization of the government enterprise and empowerment programme (GEEP) as a sustainable national social protection financing mechanism through a dedicated revenue allocation.
“The need to ensure sustainable financing for humanitarian response and disaster management via Humanitarian Interventions Trust Fund. Empowering national and state emergency management agencies and mechanisms.”
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Kano State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Amina ‘Yar Gaya described the meeting as timely and apt.
She commented Dr Aminu Magashi for his sustained efforts, which she described as a major catalyst for impactful and fruitful humanitarian interventions in Kano State.
According to he, the ministry has taken note of the issues raised during the meeting and would work towards achieving the outlined objectives.
In his remarks, the Chairman, House Committee on Humanitarian Affairs, Kano House of Assembly, Sule Lawan Shuwaki, disclosed that preparations are ongoing to pass a humanitarian law in the state.
He also highlighted other humanitarian interventions in the state, including the recent evacuation of mentally challenged persons from the streets, the establishment of new care centres and support from development partners.
Hon. Shuwaki identified the influx of displaced persons from neighbouring states as a major challenge affecting humanitarian interventions in Kano but reaffirmed the state commitment to working tirelessly to improve humanitarian outcomes.
Participants pledged to work collectively to implement programs that would improve the lives of vulnerable populations in Kano State.
