The Kano State Taskforce Committee on Primary Health Care (PHC) has convened a high-level meeting to review progress and charting new strategies to strengthen Primary Health Care services across the state.
The meeting which held at the Coronation Hall of the Kano State Government House, brought together key stakeholders in the health sector.
In his remarks, the state’s Commissioner of Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring accessible, equitable, and quality health care for all citizens.
He commended the efforts of development partners and implementing agencies for their unwavering support in improving health outcomes in Kano State.
Health Reporters Newspaper report that goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and other development partners.
They commended the state for its sustained efforts in routine immunization, maternal and child health, and nutrition, and pledged continued collaboration to meet national and global health targets.
Presenting updates on Primary Health Care services in the state, the Director General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB), Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, highlighted key achievements in Routine Immunization (RI), Polio eradication efforts, Maternal and Child Health (MAMII), and nutrition programs.
He emphasized that the Board remains focused on increasing coverage, improving service delivery, and closing gaps in underserved communities.
In his remarks, the Emir of Kano, Dr Muhammadu Sunusi II, ably represented by Madakin Kano Alhaji Yusuf Nabahani lauded the state government’s proactive approach in safeguarding the health of its people.
He urged community leaders and traditional institutions to continue mobilizing citizens for routine immunization and other health interventions.
On his part, Deputy Governor of Kano State and Chairman of the State Taskforce on Primary Health Care, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam, reiterated the administration’s resolve to prioritize primary health care as the foundation of the health system.
He called for stronger coordination among government agencies, development partners, and local government authorities to sustain progress and achieve universal health coverage.
Representative of the ALGON Chairperson, who is also the Vice Chairman of Gaya Local Government Area, Hon. Mahmoud Tajo Gaya, appreciated the active participation of all stakeholders and reaffirmed the commitment of local government councils to supporting primary health care programmes at the grassroots level.
The meeting ended with an award presentation to the best performing four LGAs, and a pledge was made by all stakeholders to strengthen routine immunization, improve maternal and child health, and promote nutrition to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the people of Kano State.
