Kano Women’s Affairs Commissioner outlines achievements on International Women’s Day

The Kano State Commissioner of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi (HOD) has outlined achievements of her ministry to celebrate the contributions of women as the world celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD).

Addressing a Press Conference to mark the 2025 International Women’s Day Celebrations at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, the commissioner described IWD as a global celebration of women’s achievements, while also acknowledging the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

She said is a day to recognize the significant contributions women make to the society, economy, and politics.

“This year’s theme, ‘For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,’ resonates deeply with our commitment to promoting women’s empowerment and social inclusion in Kano State.

“As we gather here today, we are reminded that despite progress, women and girls continue to face significant barriers to equality, including discrimination, violence, and limrds making women’s lives more sustainable and improving their affordability of living.”

Hajiya Amina Abdullahi also acknowledged the tireless efforts of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in empowering women in the state, by implementing several initiatives aimed at promoting women’s economic empowerment.

She outlined some of the initiatives to includes; “⁠Distribution of 7,158 goats to 2,386 women as part of the Livestock Fattening Programme under the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.

“⁠N50,000 monthly empowerment program for vulnerable women; provision of microfinance loans to support women’s businesses and entrepreneurship, training programmes for women in various skills such as tailoring, knitting, and cosmetics production and establishment of women’s economic empowerment centres to provide training, counselling, and support services.

“Others are scholarship programs for girls and women to support their education and career development, distribution of food items and other essential commodities to vulnerable women and their families, as well as support for women in agriculture, including provision of seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs.”

The commissioner reiterated that the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled, is committed to supporting these initiatives and promoting women’s empowerment in our state.

“Our ministry is working tirelessly to formulate policies and programs that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment, provide training and capacity-building programs for women to enhance their skills and economic opportunities, establish partnerships with local and international organizations to support women’s empowerment initiatives.

“⁠Planning to inaugurate the Child Protection Implementation Committee and to establish the People with Disability Commission, which will also support women with disability; stablish the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (Waraka), established Gender Based Violence Response Team and Committee,” she added.

Amina Abdullahi stated that part of the ministry’s complimentary efforts is the domestication of the national policy of Women Economic Empowerment, a policy she revealed that iit was recently validated and is awaiting executive council’s approval.

She pledged to continue to work closely with Kano State Government to ensure that women in the state are empowered to reach their full potential.
