Lassa fever: 13 still under observation in Delta

The Delta State Government said 13 of the 55 people that had contact with a doctor, who died of Lassa fever in the state are still being observed.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, who disclosed this in a statement, said the 13 person would be closely monitored for “one more week.”

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge, had on August 22 confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever, which claimed the live of one person, with 32 others placed on closed surveillance.

The surveillance was also extended to cover all contacts with the deceased doctor who has put about 55 persons over the period. According to Mr. Ukah, 32 of the 55 contacts placed on watch in the state have been declared free of the disease.

“Sensitisation and advocacy to Local Government Areas, Primary Health Care Centres, schools, market places, among others will be intensified to achieve the desired result,’’ the commissioner said.

He advised the people of the state to keep their environment clean and cultivate appropriate sanitary behaviour.
