‘Maternal Mortalilty on the increase in Bauchi’

No fewer than 95 pregnant women died during delivery in Secondary Healthcare facilities in Bauchi state.

The Chairman, Maternal Death Review Committee, Dr. Robinson Yusuf made the disclosure during the 2nd quarter State Maternal and Pre-Natal Deaths Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) stakeholders meeting held at the Specialist Hospital Auditorium, Bauchi.

He said explained that the meeting aimed at providing platform for stakeholders in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) in the state to continue discussion on ways of improving the MNCH service with focus on deaths audit approach.

Dr. Yusuf further said most of the death were caused by Malaria, Sepsis, Eclampsia while the cause of 31 death out of the 95 remain
unknown.

He said out of the 25 General Hospitals across the state, General Hospital Alkaleri recorded the highest number of 23 Pre-Natal death.

“Out of the 17, 605 pregnant women that attend Ante-Natal Care (ANC) in secondary health facilities only 6, 086 delivered in a hospital.

Dr. Yusuf also express worry over the weak record system at the health facilities and their inability to disseminate for the purpose of critical review.
