The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Zamfara state said it has set up a 10-man ad-hoc committee to check activities of quacks in the state.

The state secretary of NMA, Dr. Mannir Tsafe, who stated this in an interview with newsmen in Gusau, the state capital said that the association was worried about the increasing activities of some mischievous people, who were not trained in medical and health profession, but rendering medical and health services to the public.

“It is part of NMA’s duties, as association of medical practitioners, to support government to reduce illegal activities in the health sector, in view of its negative impacts to the public health.

“This committee will collaborate with relevant government organisations, security agencies and other stakeholders to assist government in fighting such illegal activities,” he said.

According to him, the committee will monitor all the state health facilities and ensure closure of any substandard or illegal healthcare centres across the state.

He said that the committee would also ensure prosecution of anybody involved in such illegal activities.

Dr. Tsafe said that the committee would be headed by the Director, Medical Services at the State Hospital Services Management Board, Dr. Dalhatu Moriki,

He urged the state government, security agencies, and all stakeholders to support the association to achieve its objective.

The NMA scribe urged the general public to assist the association with useful information on illegal medical or healthcare services.
