The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has trained 1,447 midwives in Kaduna state under its Midwives Service Scheme (MSS), its Executive Director, Professor Echezona Ezeanolue, has said.

Professor Ezeanolue made the disclosure in Kaduna during the orientation of some the newly trained midwives.

He said that the health workers were trained on life saving skills, modified lifesaving skills and other skills and competencies to improve the quality of healthcare at the primary level.

He said that the scheme was introduced by the federal government to reverse the high rate of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.

“The ultimate goal to reduce maternal and child mortality to the barest minimum. It is our belief that the scheme will continue to strengthen Primary Health Care in Nigeria and leave positive bearing on all the other levels of healthcare,” he said.

The executive director noted that the scheme had not only helped in reducing the high rate of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria, but had also helped in revitalizing primary healthcare services in the country.

In his remarks, Kaduna state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Paul Dogo, reiterated the commitment of the government to ensure that every woman in the state had access to quality delivery.

He added that the government was committed to revive primary healthcare to improve access to healthcare delivery.

In his remarks at the occasion, Duro Mohammed, a member of the society for Obstetricians and Gynecologist, promised that the association would assist midwives in the state.
