The Taraba State Government said it has concluded arrangement to train 1,223 health workers engaged at health facilities with the view to improve maternal and child healthcare services in the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Innocent Vakkai, who made this known during the official flagging off of the Save One Million Lives project (SOML) in Jalingo, said the programme was designed with the support of Federal Ministry of Health and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

He explained that the SOML components includes; Pent 3, Vitamin ‘A’ supplementation, nutrition, utilization of insecticides treated nets, skills delivery, HIV testing, counselling and contraceptive usage.
He stated that the programme will train 330 health workers on vaccines management, 171 on prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS.
He added that 450 health workers will be train on live saving scheme to improve quality of deliveries with provision of delivery kits to pregnant women attending anti-natal in public health facilities across the state and 368 will also be trained on the distribution of nets.
The commissioner further explained that renovation of 33 family planning units is ongoing, while renovation of 33 PMTCT units in 33 health facilities across the 16 local government areas of the state will start soon.
