The Chief Medical Director of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, Dr. Yakubu Ahmed has advised the Federal Government to adopt the Public Private Partnership (PPP) approach in the execution of capital projects in the nation’s tertiary hospitals.
Dr. Ahmed gave the advice in Sokoto when he received a seven-man projects inspection team from the Fiscal Responsibility Commission.
He said that the approach would curb the endemic corruption plaguing the execution of such projects.
“Institutions like ours should be supported to engage private investors in the building of structures needed as well as the provision of hospital consumables. Same should be done for the provision of hospital equipment and their routine maintenance,” he said.
The CMD further said that would curb corruption in the system and enable the government to save more funds and would help reduce medical tourism.
According to him, the money to be saved can be ploughed back into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to provide more healthcare services to the Nigerian poor.
