The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has donated a Primary Health Centre (PHC) to persons with disabilities in Karon Magiji community in Abuja.
The Fund’s Country Representative, Ms Ulla Mueller, while inaugurating the facility on Monday, said that the donation was in commemoration of the 2022 International Day of People Living with Disabilities.
Mueller, who was represented by Ms Erika Goldson, the UNFPA Deputy Country Representative, restated the commitment of the United Nations to carry everyone along in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of leaving no one behind.
She said “we are working together with Nigerian government to ensure disability inclusivity for sustainable Nigeria.”
The UNFPA country representative added that the Fund would continue to provide support aimed at engendering quality healthcare for all, especially the vulnerable.
Chief Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), commended UNFPA Nigeria for making healthcare accessible to persons with disabilities.
Ojukwu, who was represented by Mr Anthony Yikarebogga, said the facility would not only restore the confidence of persons with disabilities, but give them access to quality healthcare.
Mrs Celina Oluwafemi, the Deputy Director, International Cooperation, FCTA, expressed gratitude to UNFPA for providing the facility to the community.
Alhaji Mohammed Katsina, the Emir of Disability Colony, Karon Magiji in Abuja, expressed profound gratitude to the UNFPA for giving the people a sense of belonging in terms of accessible healthcare.
Katsina expressed hope that the facility would be a stepping stone in the development of neighbouring communities too.
International Day of People Living with Disabilities is marked annually around the globe on December 3, to raise awareness on the hardships faced by people living with disabilities.
