Nigeria is committed to safe application of biotech – DG

The Director-General of the the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), said the agency would strive to achieve excellence under her leadership.

She said this at a media chat in Abuja on Thursday.

“Under my leadership NBMA will strive to achieve excellence in biosafety governance.

“Our vision is to create an environment where cutting edge biotechnology and its application can coexist harmoniously in our environment public health and social economic needs.

“The key focus of my work here shall be enhancing biosafety standards. We will work assiduously to foster biosafety standards in collaboration with our numerous relevant stakeholders,” she said.

“Our aim is to establish a world class regulatory system that will instil confidence amongst citizens and investors alike,” Asagbra assured.

She said biosafety required high level of transparency and public engagement.

“We will actively and openly embrace dialogue and consult with the public to address concerns and disseminate information effectively.

“The development of human resources is vital to the successes of any organisation. We will invest in trainings and skill development programmes for our staff to be at the forefront of biosafety regulations.

“Definitely there would be room for emerging levels of science and in particular biotechnology,” she promised.

She assured that the safe and responsible use of Genetically Modified Organisms and other biotechnological advancement would be a top priority for the agency.

Asagbra, a scientist and a researcher for 30 years, assumed office as NBMA DG on May 2, 2023.
