The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI) conducted its third advocacy visit to the Kano State Ministry of Public Procurement, Project Monitoring and Evaluation, to follow up on its advocacy.

The letter, titled “Recognition of Inclusive and Accessible Infrastructure for Persons with Disabilities in Public and Private Buildings in Kano State,” advocates for the integration of the needs and rights of persons with disabilities into the planning, design, implementation, and monitoring of public and private infrastructure projects.

It emphasizes that all infrastructure should be designed and constructed to accommodate every citizen, regardless of disability, thereby promoting accessibility, inclusion, and equal participation.

In his response, Commissioner of Public Procurement, Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Dr Nura Iro Ma’aji informed the Coordinator of V-PeSDI, Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, that the Ministry had submitted a memorandum to the Executive Governor.

The memorandum was accompanied by copies of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 and the Kano State Persons with Disabilities (Amendment No. 1) Law, 2022 as supporting legal instruments.

The proposal seeks to make accessible infrastructure a mandatory requirement for all public and private buildings, ensuring that accessibility is incorporated from the architectural design stage through construction, as well as in existing infrastructure undergoing renovation or upgrade.

V-PeSDI appreciates the prompt action taken by the Commissioner in response to the concerns raised through its advocacy efforts.

The organization remains committed to advancing the rights, inclusion, and welfare of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups in Kano State and beyond through sustained advocacy, strategic partnerships, and evidence-based policy engagement.
