The Kano State Police Command said the security architecture it put in place, in partnership with sister agencies and communities, has continued to deliver positive results across the state.
Speaking at a press briefing held on Monday, 31st August 2026 at the Police Headquarters, Bompai, Kano, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said the Command’s efforts are in line with the strategic policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
CP Bakori reported a drastic reduction in major crimes across Kano State for the month of August. He attributed the success to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, sustained community engagement, and the support of the Kano State Government.
According to him, 24-hour patrols, targeted raids on criminal hideouts, stop-and-search duties, and continuous dialogue with traditional and religious leaders have significantly weakened criminal networks.
“In Kano Metropolis, the Command intensified community engagement and intelligence operations. A total of 117 suspected thugs were arrested in August during coordinated raids in flashpoints. Dangerous weapons and large quantities of illicit drugs were recovered,” he said.
CP Bakori added that it has restored sustained peace to previously volatile areas such as Dala, Kofar Nassarawa, Sheka, Dorayi, Rimin Kebbe, and Hotoro. Operations are still ongoing in Bachirawa, Gobirawa and Tudun Fulani to dismantle remaining thuggery cells.
On border security, CP Bakori said the Command has heightened intelligence gathering and surveillance along boundary communities to prevent infiltration by bandits fleeing neighbouring states.
“Through community support, operatives arrested suspected kidnappers, bandits, and gun runners, and recovered prohibited firearms and ammunition. Visibility policing has also been enhanced at all entry and exit points to ensure Kano does not become a safe haven for criminals.”
The Command also highlighted several major cases recorded in August.
“In a gun-running syndicate bust at Dorayi Babba and Rijiyar Zaki, police recovered one Tokarev pistol with 48 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition on 13/08/2026. Follow-up investigations led to the recovery of two more pistols and 17 additional rounds from Kebbi State and Bichi LGA, and the arrest of two more suspects. Investigation is ongoing,” CP Bakori added.
The Command added that drug enforcement also recorded massive seizures. On August 25, operatives intercepted a Volkswagen Golf at Bajallabe with 13,837 sachets of Tramadol being transported from Abuja.
“Further search at Rimin Auzinawa yielded five cartons of Tramadol, three cartons of Diazepam and other illicit drugs, with one female suspect arrested.
“Other busts included 614 wraps of Cannabis in Gezawa on August 14, and multiple arrests of drug peddlers in Rijiyar Lemo and Panshekara with Diazepam, Pregabalin, Exol and Indian Hemp recovered.
In financial crime, the Anti-Kidnapping Squad arrested a 46-year-old fraudster, Muhammad Dahiru, on August 5. He allegedly used fake bank alerts to defraud a company of N13,154,229 and 7 electric motorcycles worth N10,000,000. Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate.
The Command also recorded successes against vehicle and property theft. A stolen Pontiac traced to Taraba State and Niger Republic was recovered on August 1. While on August 4, the Special Intervention Squad arrested two car thieves and a tricycle theft syndicate, recovering 2 cars and 4 tricycles.
“Three additional stolen vehicles were recovered in Dawakin Tofa and Sharada. Four suspects were also arrested for stealing security lights and a water tank from a SEMA site in Dorayi Babba,” he said.
Other arrests in August included suspects for shop breaking, armed robbery, livestock theft, and unlawful possession of military camouflage.
“In total, 244 suspects were arrested for major crimes between Aigust 1 and 31, 2026. The breakdown includes 8 suspected kidnappers, 28 armed robbers, 7 vehicle thieves, 19 drug dealers, 117 thugs, and 65 others.”
On election security, CP Bakori said the Command has activated robust arrangements ahead of the 2027 General Elections. On August 27, a strategic meeting was held with political party leaders, IPAC, INEC, the Council of Ulama, CSOs and other security agencies. Stakeholders were warned against hate speech, violence and thuggery.
“The Command will deploy personnel to protect INEC facilities and campaign venues, and has set up an Election Security Situation Room and Complaint Response Desk to ensure a level playing field.”
Summarizing August’s achievements, CP Bakori said police recovered 17,684 sachets and 614 wraps of illicit drugs, including Tramadol, Diazepam, Pregabalin, Exol and Indian Hemp.
They also recovered 3 pistols, 65 rounds of ammunition, 6 motor vehicles, 4 tricycles and 7 motorcycles. He noted there has been a general reduction in crime and sustained peace in most parts of the metropolis.
CP Bakori thanked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support, and commended the people of Kano for their cooperation and timely information.
He also praised officers for their professionalism. The Command, he said, remains committed to protecting lives and property, and urged residents to keep reporting suspicious activities through police emergency lines.
