Employ environmental health officers to enhance sanitation, EHORECON urges FG

The Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria, (EHORECON) has urged the Federal Ministry of Environment to employ more professionals to promote environmental health for effective service delivery.

Assistant Director, Registration Ethics and Standard Enforcement of the council, Mr. Andy Ukah, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

Mr. Ukah said that the inadequate numbers of the professionals was affecting the service delivery in the area of environmental sanitation across the country.

He said that more hands would engender the prevention of diseases as well as assisting in mobilising and covering national sanitation.

According to him, recruitment of more environmental health officers will go a long way in preventing the spread of diseases that can give a negative name to our nation.

“When the environment is not friendly to humans and animals it can result to all kind of diseases. So when the number of the officers increased, in all states, even up to the local areas, it will assist to cover the national sanitation.

“The effort will promote the environmental sanitation and the officers will equally educate people on the importance of daily environmental sanitation,” he said.

Ukah said that World Toilet Day was a campaign to motivate and mobilise people around the world on issues of sanitation and the theme tagged, “Toilets and Jobs.’’

He said that the World Toilet Day was established by World Toilet Organisation in 2001, to draw attention to global sanitation issues, adding that it is marked every November 19.

He said that the council had liaised with other relevant agencies for a joint enlightenment campaign, to sensitise the public on the dangers of keeping toilets and the environment unhealthy.

He said that the sensitisation would assist to curb unpredictable diseases and promote the environmental sanitation activities in such areas.
