At the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard M. Doro has called for a shift from mere assistance to building lasting prosperity for vulnerable Nigerians.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, under the leadership of the Honourable Minister, Dr Doro, convened a high-level side event titled: “Beyond Assistance: Reducing Poverty, Advancing Protection and Building Shared Prosperity.”
The event, organised in partnership with Innovations for Poverty Action, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), IQS and the Learning Economic Foundation, brought together global leaders and experts to explore ways of linking lifesaving assistance with protection, recovery and economic opportunities.
Dignitaries at the event included Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Mr Mohamed Yahya, who represented the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed; the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; and Ms. Ugochi Daniels, IOM Deputy Director General for Operations.
Health Reporters Newspaper leant that; two expert panel sessions also provided practical insights into the discourse.
Speaking at the event, stakeholders stressed that while humanitarian assistance must save lives, efforts should not end there, noting that vulnerable households need credible pathways to resilience, self-reliance and shared prosperity.
Under Dr Doro’s leadership, the Ministry said it is advancing a more integrated approach that connects humanitarian response, social protection, poverty reduction and economic inclusion, adding that the “Beyond Assistance” initiative is a call to translate ambition into sustained action.
