The Kano State Government has approved the upgrade of five Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to General Hospitals as part of efforts to boost healthcare service delivery across the state.
The affected facilities are: Garun Malam PHC in Garun Malam Local Government Area (LGA), Kumbotso PHC in Kumbotso LGA, Ghari PHC in Ghari LGA, Garko PHC in Garko LGA and Kachako PHC in Takai LGA.
This is contained in a statement issued to newsmen by the Public Relations Officer, Kano State Hospital Management Board (HMB), Ms Samira Suleiman in Kano.
She said that the Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Mansur Mudi-Nagoda, has constituted a team to commence the immediate assessment and takeover of the facilities.
According to her, the team will assess the existing infrastructure, manpower, equipment and other requirements needed for their effective transition to General Hospitals.
She added that the team would submit its findings and recommendations to the state government for necessary action.
The PRO explained that the upgrade was aimed at expanding access to secondary healthcare services, particularly in underserved communities.
The initiative, she said, would also reduce pressure on existing general and specialist hospitals, improve referral pathways and strengthen healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
She said that the Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, and Executive Secretary, commended Gov. Abba Yusuf for approving the upgrade.
The PRO assured that the State Ministry of Health and HMB would work to ensure the effective implementation of the decision.
