The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Rivers Chapter has declared Monday and Tuesday work-free days to mourn its dead member, Dr Sam Okpara aged 62. The state NMA Chairman, Dr Ibifuro Green, told the News men in Port Harcourt that doctors in public and private hospitals would stay out of duty. However during the work-free days doctors would handle only emergency cases.

He wondered why doctors had become kidnappers’ targets, and noted that the gangsters had erroneous impression that doctors are rich people. Green explained that doctors were civil servants, and appealed to the kidnappers to leave his members alone. The late Okpara was kidnapped and tortured to death by his abductors and dumped in a cassava farm behind Comprehensive College in Borokiri Area of Port Harcourt.

He was among the five doctors abducted between Feb. 17 and Feb. 20 in Port Harcourt.

It was earlier reported that one of the victims had been flown overseas for treatment due to the gunshot injuries infected on his legs by his abductors.
