Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has elected Dr (Prof.) Afekhide Ernest Omoti as its new National President to steer the association for the next two years.
Health Reporters Newspaper reports that the election took place on Saturday during the Annual General Congress and Delegates Meetings held Saturday in Kano, Kano State.
Prof. Omoti scored 253 votes in the keenly contested election to defeat Dr Lancy Nosa Orhue who polled 143 votes to emerge as the second runner-up.
The election of Prof. Omoti alongside other members of the executive committee, marks a new leadership cycle for the association, succeeding the previous administration of Prof. Bala Audu.
Prof Omoti is an honourary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Benin. He is the Chairman, National Eye Health Committee of Nigeria.
He is the Editor in Chief of the journal, Annals of Medical and Surgical Practice and an Executive member of the Nigerian Medical Association, Edo State. He is also the Chairman, Doctor of Medicine MD implementation committee of the Faculty of Ophthalmology as well as a faculty board member and examiner at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
He is a former Chairman, Edo State Branch of the NMA, Chairman Medical and Dental Consultants Association of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, and Secretary Ophthalmology Society of Nigeria, Edo/Delta zone.
He is a member of the Oxford Ophthalmology Congress, UK and Christian Ophthalmological Society, USA.
Omoti has over 140 scientific research publications in international and local peer reviewed journals and has attended and presented papers at the World Ophthalmology Conference and American Academy of Ophthalmology.
