The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI) has secured a commitment from the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Bakori, to support the provision of accessible infrastructure at the Police Headquarters, Bompai, Kano State.

The commitment followed an advocacy engagement by Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, Coordinator of V-PeSDI, during a joint meeting with members of the Kano Network of NGOs (KANET) at the Commissioner’s office in Bompai.

During the engagement, Sarina presented an advocacy campaign poster highlighting the importance of accessible infrastructure within police premises and the need to ensure that persons with disabilities can access police services safely, independently, and with dignity.

The advocacy focused on the removal of physical barriers that can prevent persons with disabilities, older persons, and people with mobility challenges from accessing essential public services.

In particular, V-PeSDI called for the provision of accessible ramps at the Police Headquarters to facilitate safe and dignified access.

Responding to the advocacy request, CP Ibrahim Bakori commended Sarina for his continued efforts to advance disability inclusion and accessibility in public spaces. He expressed his commitment to providing accessible ramps within the Police Headquarters, Bompai.

V-PeSDI considers this commitment an important step towards strengthening disability-inclusive policing and ensuring that law-enforcement facilities are accessible to everyone, regardless of disability or mobility status.

Accessible police infrastructure is not merely a matter of physical convenience. It is closely connected to equal access to justice, security, protection, and essential public services.

Persons with disabilities should be able to report cases, seek protection, obtain assistance, and interact with law-enforcement institutions without encountering avoidable physical barriers.

The engagement demonstrates the importance of strategic, evidence-based, and sustained advocacy in translating disability inclusion from policy commitments into practical institutional action.

V-PeSDI appreciates the openness of the Kano State Police Command to engage with disability inclusion concerns and looks forward to continued collaboration towards making public institutions across Kano State more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
