The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI) has participated in a two-day workshop organized by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC II) Programme, with support from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).
The workshop brought together Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), digital content creators, facilitators, and observers to enhance the development, printing, and dissemination of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), disability inclusion, and child protection.
During the first day of the workshop, participants engaged in intensive and interactive sessions focused on strengthening their understanding of IEC materials as powerful tools for advocacy, awareness creation, and social transformation.
A statement issued by the V-PeSDI Coordinator, Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, stated that discussions at the workshop explored the fundamental principles of effective communication, including audience identification, message development, visual design, and the creation of impactful advocacy materials.
As part of the practical sessions, V-PeSDI presented six proposed IEC material concepts aimed at promoting disability inclusion and advancing the rights of persons with disabilities. Following a comprehensive review by facilitators and observers, three concepts were selected for further development:
Disability Is Not Inability; Accessible Services Benefit Everyone, and Empower Persons with Disabilities for a Better Society
The selected concepts underwent detailed discussions, with expert recommendations provided to improve clarity, accessibility, inclusiveness, and audience engagement. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that the messages reflected a rights-based approach and effectively communicated the importance of disability inclusion.
“On the second day, participants reviewed and refined the selected IEC materials, incorporating feedback received during the assessment process. The revisions focused on strengthening key messages, enhancing accessibility features, and maximizing the overall impact of the materials. The finalized IEC concepts were subsequently prepared for submission and further production processes.
“The workshop concluded with a robust question-and-answer session, allowing participants to seek clarification, exchange experiences, and reflect on lessons learned throughout the training,” Sarina said.
Speaking on the significance of the workshop, V-PeSDI expressed appreciation to the organizers for providing a platform that strengthens the capacity of CSOs to design effective communication materials that promote inclusion, protection, and social justice.
“This workshop has enhanced our knowledge and practical skills in developing impactful IEC materials that can drive positive behavioral change and increase awareness on disability inclusion.
“We are grateful to RoLAC II and International IDEA for recognizing the contributions of organizations like V-PeSDI in advancing inclusive development,” the organization stated.
V-PeSDI remains committed to promoting the rights, dignity, and empowerment of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
The organization will continue to champion initiatives that foster accessibility, equal opportunities, and meaningful participation for all, particularly in Kano State and across Nigeria.
