Some people celebrate birthdays. Others celebrate a lifetime of making a difference. Dr Aminu Magashi Garba represents the power of service, mentorship, and development that puts people first.

For almost three decades, Dr Aminu Magashi has contributed to Nigeria’s development landscape through public health advocacy, community development, humanitarian interventions, civil society strengthening, policy engagement, and the mentorship of emerging and established development leaders.

His journey reflects a conviction that sustainable development requires more than government policies and good intentions. It demands strong institutions, empowered communities, courageous civil society organisations, accountable leadership, and people willing to invest their knowledge and experience in others.

From supporting CSOs and NGOs to strengthening advocacy, facilitating partnerships, engaging policymakers, supporting community initiatives, and mentoring generations of development practitioners, his work reflects a commitment to building not just projects, but people, institutions, and lasting capacity.

Through his development engagements, including the Africa Health Budget Network and AMG Foundation, he has demonstrated the importance of connecting community realities with policy decisions, humanitarian needs with practical action, and citizens’ concerns with institutional responsibility.

His contribution to mentorship deserves particular recognition. For nearly three decades, he has helped create space for others to learn, grow, lead, and contribute to society. Such investment in people is a legacy whose impact can extend far beyond any single project or organisation.

A BIRTHDAY WISH THAT MUST BECOME A DEVELOPMENT AGENDA

As we celebrate Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, Kano State and the Federal Government of Nigeria must recognise that expertise of this calibre is a development asset that should be strategically leveraged.

Our governments need experienced practitioners who understand communities, can convene diverse stakeholders, strengthen civil society, translate evidence into policy, mobilise partnerships, and help turn development commitments into measurable results.

Kano State, in particular, can benefit from deeper engagement with his experience in humanitarian coordination, public health financing, community development, institutional strengthening, and civil society partnership.

At the federal level, his expertise can contribute to national efforts in health-sector accountability, social protection, community resilience, and effective collaboration between government and non-state actors.

The call is clear: move beyond celebrating expertise to strategically engaging it.

Government should create structured opportunities for experienced development practitioners like Dr Magashi to contribute through technical advisory roles, policy working groups, institutional capacity-building programmes, and government–civil society partnerships, with clear objectives and measurable outcomes.

Because development is not only about the resources we have. It is also about the experience we deploy, the partnerships we build, and the people we empower.

May this new chapter bring you renewed strength, wisdom, good health, greater opportunities, and even more platforms to transform lives.

May your years of service continue to inspire a new generation of development leaders, strengthen institutions, empower communities, and contribute to a Nigeria where expertise is valued, mentorship is sustained, and development delivers tangible results for ordinary people.

Your birthday is more than a personal celebration. It is a reminder that Nigeria must recognise, engage, and maximise the knowledge of those who have dedicated their lives to serving humanity.

Happy Birthday to a development practitioner, mentor, advocate, and builder of people and institutions. May your impact continue to grow, and may your experience find even greater expression in the service of Kano State, Nigeria, and humanity.
