The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, says it has produced smart disinfection chambers to help contain the spread of corona virus. The Head of Department (HOD) of Mechatronics Department, Major. Abubakar Imam, said this during the exhibition of the machine on Wednesday 27th May 2020 in Kaduna.

Imam said that it was achieved through hard work and committed research activities. Imam said the COVID-19 pandemic motivated the creation of the smart disinfectant chamber known as Ultra-Violent Walk-Through Disinfection Tunnel (UV-WTDT) and the Chemical Based Walk-Through Disinfection Tunnel (CB-WTDT).

“The CB-WTDT incorporated a hydraulic system for the atomisation of chemical based disinfectant, an automated body temperature sensor and an automated sanitiser dispensing unit.

“The CB-WTDT can be installed at the entrances of public places, offices, supermarkets, hospitals. worship places, airports and other places,” Imam said.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report, other items also displayed at the NDA exhibition of research output included side car for perimeter patrol and escort duty, fingerprint recognition for rifle operation and unmanned ground vehicle surveillance system. Others include electronic armed guard-perimeter eye-fencing, wireless rocket launch system, smart surveillance sniper rifle, multimedia electronic microscope being accessed by cadets and electronic warfare communication.

The commandant of NDA, Major General Jamil Sarham, while inspecting the equipment, said that the innovations were inputs of both military and civilian academic and non- academic staff who devoted their time and resources to uplift the quality of education.

“The prototypes being showcased are the result of original research carried out in the academy using locally sourced raw materials which in some cases are waste products….it must be emphasized that the quality and standard of these research products are comparable to similar products elsewhere in the world,” Sarham said.
