The Federal Government through the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has allocated N21.2 million to each state and the Federal Capital territory, Abuja, to bolster efforts against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

While the gesture is a welcome move, experts are questioning the adequacy of the funding given the scale of preparedness required to prevent and respond to potential outbreaks.

With Nigeria’s healthcare system still reeling from the aftermath of past disease outbreaks, including the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, the allocation raises concerns about effective implementation and resource utilization.

Therefore, states must prioritize transparency and community engagement to ensure the funds, which amounted to N784.4 million for the 36 states and Abuja, translate into tangible results, rather than merely ticking boxes.

As Nigeria watches the situation in neighbouring countries, it’s imperative that these funds are used to strengthen surveillance, enhance lab capacity, and protect frontline workers who are often the first line of defence against infectious diseases.

The NCDC must ensure accountability and swift action to justify this investment, and state governments must demonstrate a commitment to healthcare security.

The question on everyone’s mind is: will this allocation be enough to bridge the gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare system and prepare the country for potential Ebola cases? Or will it merely serve as a band-aid solution, leaving the nation vulnerable to the whims of infectious diseases? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – effective implementation and transparency will be key to making the most of this funding.

As Nigeria vigilantly watches the situation in neighbouring countries, it’s imperative that these funds strengthen surveillance, enhance lab capacity, and protect frontline workers.

The NCDC must also ensure accountability and swift action to justify this investment.
