Your Excellency,
There are moments in leadership that transcend politics and become defining chapters of humanity. The commissioning of the Abba Care Sickle Cell Centre at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, is one of those extraordinary moments.
Today, I write not as a public health advocate alone, but as a grateful citizen whose heart is filled with appreciation for a leader who has chosen compassion over convenience and people over politics.
On behalf of thousands of families, healthcare workers, advocates, partners, and every individual who believes that every life matters, I sincerely say Thank You.
Sickle Cell Disease has silently inflicted unimaginable pain on thousands of families across Kano State for generations. It has stolen dreams, drained family resources, interrupted education, affected productivity, and, in many heartbreaking cases, claimed precious lives.
Yet, for many years, countless vulnerable patients struggled to access affordable, quality, and continuous healthcare. Your administration has changed that narrative.
Through the visionary Abba Care Programme, implemented by the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), your government has successfully enrolled over 30,000 people living with Sickle Cell Disease into health insurance, ensuring that thousands of vulnerable citizens can now receive quality healthcare without the crushing burden of catastrophic medical expenses.
This is more than a healthcare intervention. It is a declaration that every life in Kano matters. It is a powerful reminder that government exists to protect the vulnerable.
It is evidence that compassionate leadership can restore dignity, inspire hope, and save lives.
The commissioning of the dedicated Abba Care Sickle Cell Centre at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, under the able leadership of the Hospital Management Board, provides a permanent home of hope where comprehensive, specialized, and patient-centred care will now be available for thousands of children, young people, and adults living with Sickle Cell Disease.
For countless families, this centre is not merely another building. It represents relief, dignity, survival and above all, it represents hope.
Your Excellency, history remembers leaders not only for the roads they build or the structures they commission, but for the lives they transform.
The smiles of parents who no longer fear unaffordable hospital bills. The courage of young warriors living with Sickle Cell Disease who now have renewed hope. The prayers of vulnerable families who finally feel seen. These will remain part of your enduring legacy.
I equally wish to sincerely acknowledge the exceptional commitment of the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr Rahila Mukhtar whose visionary leadership, tireless dedication, and unwavering passion have transformed Abba Care into one of the most impactful social health protection programmes in Nigeria.
Under her stewardship, KSCHMA has continued to respond swiftly to the healthcare needs of the poor and vulnerable, ensuring that access to quality healthcare is no longer a privilege but a right.
My profound appreciation also goes to the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Labaran Yusuf Abubakar, for providing purposeful leadership and strategic direction that continue to strengthen Kano State’s healthcare system.
I also commend the Executive Secretary of KHETFUND, Dr Fatima Zahraddeen, whose commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and health financing continues to support the realization of quality healthcare delivery across the state.
Special recognition goes to the Director General of the Hospital Management Board, Dr Nagoda, whose leadership has been instrumental in ensuring that healthcare facilities continue to expand access to specialized services that meet the needs of the people.
Together, these remarkable leaders have demonstrated what can be achieved when vision, professionalism, compassion, and teamwork come together in service of humanity.
I also extend heartfelt appreciation to every healthcare worker, development partner, donor agency, civil society organization, healthcare professional, advocate, volunteer, and stakeholder whose collective efforts made this remarkable milestone possible. Your partnership continues to strengthen Kano’s healthcare system and improve the lives of countless citizens.
As someone who has consistently advocated for improved healthcare access, health financing, and better outcomes for vulnerable populations, I find this intervention deeply inspiring. It reinforces my belief that sustainable development is achieved when governments invest in people, prioritize equity, and ensure that no one is left behind.
Your Excellency, this initiative is more than a programme, it is a legacy of compassion. It is proof that governance rooted in empathy can transform lives. Evidence that public resources can become instruments of hope. And it is a shining example for other states across Nigeria to emulate.
May this landmark achievement continue to inspire even greater investments in maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, primary healthcare, health insurance expansion, and specialized care for vulnerable populations.
May Allah (SWT) reward everyone who contributed to making this vision a reality.
May He grant Your Excellency greater wisdom, strength, good health, and continued success as you lead Kano State toward a healthier, more prosperous future.
